Chronic Discogenic Pain

What is Chronic
Discogenic Pain?

What is chronic discogenic pain (CDP)?

Discogenic pain is pain that originates from the spinal discs which act as cushions between the bones of your spine. This pain can become chronic, which is defined as lasting longer than six months. Chronic discogenic pain can be very debilitating. It can be difficult to properly diagnose, and therefore treat. This pain can produce a severe aching discomfort across the lower back that gets worse when you remain in the same position for too long, and is alleviated by rest.

How is it diagnosed?

Currently, the following methods are available to determine whether or not your back pain is discogenic in origin:

Discogram

A discogram is a minimally invasive X-ray examination of the spinal discs. A dye that can be viewed under x-ray is injected into the spinal disc that allows the physician to visualize, and increase the pressure within the disc. This method can help determine which discs are painful and which ones are not.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Using magnetic and radio waves, MRI is used to scan the body and create computer-generated images. MRI can show if the spinal discs have lost water content, which may be a method to diagnose painful discs.
